What You Need To Know About Finding The Right Ferret Cage

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

If you’ve never been a ferret owner before you might be surprised to find out just how important the right ferret cage really is. There are still pet stores that sell ferrets out of aquariums filled with cedar chips, which is really an unhealthy environment for your little guys. The right cage, the right bedding, and the right ventilation can help your ferret live a long, healthy, and happy life.

When it comes to creating or buying the perfect cage you have to take their full grown size into consideration. While ferrets are not particularly large, they need more space than your typical pocket pet cage will allow. They prefer to have various levels, places to hide, and a nice tucked away sleeping space. This allows them to rely on their natural instincts to feel safe and secure any time.

Play time in his cage will be very important to your ferret when he is left on his own. He will need enough space to do this. Without the ability to play on his own he may end up becoming destructive inside his cage from boredom. If he doesn’t receive enough out of the cage play time and has no way to play inside his cage, behavioral and health problems are bound to arise.

Many pet ferrets are literal escape artists. Many home made cages fail because the door is not secure enough and your little guy finds a way to let himself out unattended. This can be very dangerous as most of us only ferret proof one or two rooms and do not take precautions throughout the entire house. Too much freedom can easily lead to injury or death.

Without enough air flow your ferret can get very ill or even die. Glass cages can heat up in direct sunlight the same way your car heats up through the windows. In order to make sure that there is enough air moving through the cage, go with a wire structure.

Ventilation is equally as necessary when it comes to keeping them healthy around their bedding. It has been proven that the cedar chip bedding can be disastrous for ferrets, especially when confined to a cage without air flow. Recycled newspaper bedding is much healthier for them, but you still want to ensure that there is ample fresh air moving through the cage.

When you’re designing or buying the perfect ferret cages, try to think about how their life be when you’re not home. Since ferrets are truly not meant to be caged long term, you have to figure out a way to keep them healthy, happy, and mentally stimulated when they have to spend some time in there. This can often be done with a bit of education and forethought on their behalf.

  • cat brush: The tools on the market today such as the furminator make it so easy to groom your cat. I no longer go to professional groomers.
  • Jodi Adams: I agree, it's always good to research and understand the pets needs before getting one. They are also great companionship for seniors. Cheers Jod
