Training Ferrets – Some Easy Methods

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

If you are taking a ferret as a pet then the most important task would be to get it vaccinated. Ferrets can be trained effectively, but it is not so easy to train them, as compared to dogs and cats. The difficult part for training ferrets is to make him learn the household rules.

The easiest method to be adopted for training is to reward the ferret for good behavior, as in the case of other animals. Keeping it caged and paying no attention, even if it howls or growls, is another method that can be used for transforming it into an obedient animal.

Ferrets are energetic creatures and love to move around a lot. As a result, the rooms can be messed up. Another common problem is nipping. But with a little bit of patience, ferrets can be trained not to nip and use the litter, instead of messing around.

Ferrets can be taught to come by calling out its name. This lesson saves you a lot of time and anxiety, as ferrets have the habit of creeping in small cramped places. During its training, the ferret should be rewarded with food as soon as it responds to your call and comes out. Doing this makes him more obedient.

Small chicken pieces or liver flavored semi moist food items are ideal treats for ferrets. An effective way for training ferrets is to place some food treats inside a tin box and rattle it while calling out its name. In a few days the ferret will identify the rattling sound of the tin with its name and treat, and come to you.

Baby ferrets are easiest to train and can be made to grow into happy and healthy adults through training and interactions at frequent intervals. Baby ferrets are also very playful and intelligent and can also learn tricks.

During the training, the most important thing would be to allow him to slow down after his initial boisterous play and habits. This is because until and unless he pays attention, he cannot learn much. The other important factor would be to take the ferret to the same area for his lessons, usually away from distractions.

If you have enough time and patience for training ferrets, you can train the pet ferret to bring things, sit up or roll over. This can be achieved if you repeat and reward him often. Once you are successful in the training process, the joyous moments of playing with it would be many.

  • cat brush: The tools on the market today such as the furminator make it so easy to groom your cat. I no longer go to professional groomers.
  • Jodi Adams: I agree, it's always good to research and understand the pets needs before getting one. They are also great companionship for seniors. Cheers Jod
