Thoroughbred Racehorses

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

History of the Thoroughbred horse:
This breed of horse was first bred in England due to the English horsemens want to own a quick race horse. There are three that founded this bloodline which are: Byerley Turk, Darley Arabian and Godolphin Arabian, all named after their owners, Thomas Darley, Lord Godolphin and Captain Robert Byerley. All of these stallions were imported to England from the Mediterranean Middle Eastduring 1670 and 1710. The result was a breed that could hold weight with sustained speeds over comprehensive distances. Approximately 9/10 of present thoroughbreds have derived from Eclipse the grandsire of whom was Darley Arabian, who never lost in eighteen races. This started a very refined breeding practice which has continued for nearly 250 years, breeding the greatest race horses, giving them authorityand brilliance on the race track.

Throughout the turn of the 1700′s, breeding accounts for Thoroughbred horses were meager and usually incomplete, and typically, they would not name a horse before the young horse had proven themself commendable. A man named James Weatherby, through his own inquiries and relentless work, and by the collection of his personal privately owned pedigree records published the earliest volume of the General Stud Book. This was done in 1791. The foremost book listed 387 mares, every one of which could be traced back to Eclipse. The General Studbook is still available in the UK by Weatherby and Sons. Many years afterward, as thoroughbred racing proliferated in North America the necessity for a pedigree registry for American Bred Thoroughbreds, akin to the General Stud Book became obvious.

In 1873, the earliest American Stud Book was available by Colonel Sanders D. Bruce. This man used up practically a lifetime studying the pedigrees of American Thoroughbreds. He continued the example of the General Stud Book creating six volumes of the register up until 1896 when the project was carried on by The Jockey Club. The accuracy of the American Stud Book is the foundation on which all Thoroughbred horse racing in North America depends. The earliest edition of the American Stud Book released by The Jockey Club had a foal amount of around 3,000. In 1986 in had grown to an astonishing 51,000. In the present day The Jockey Club owns an elaborate new computer system to counter the registration challenges presented by the gigantic amount of yearly registrations. The Jockey Club is responsible for and operates one of the most complicated computer operations in the world at present, with its database holding in excess of 1.8 million thoroughbred horses on a master pedigree record, with names that can be traced back to the 1800′s. Including bloodlines, this computer also processes daily racing outcomes of all Thoroughbred race in North America, not forgetting the power to process digitally submitted pedigree and racing data from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and other primary Thoroughbred districts. An additional descendant of Darley Arabian is Diomed; who won the earliest running of the Kentucky Derby in 1780. At 21 years of age he was brought to America where he produced the male line via his son, Sir Archie.

Thoroughbreds are the preferred option for track racing. Most thoroughbreds are born between January and April, although their certified date of birth is January 1 of the current year. Through their initial year of growth, they are developing size and power with the youth commencing his training as a yearling. Throughbred horses learn to receive a bridle and a saddle and a short while after a rider on its back to break the horse and prepare him for the starting gate and the competition around the track.
