Prolonging Betta Fish Life Span

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

Betta fish life expectancy can extend from approximately 2-5 years in captivity.  Usually they survive two to three years but this can be extended.  If a betta is cared for they can live five or more years.  The conditions of the water and tank should be consistent, clean, and in good condition.  Furthermore, it’s crucial that your betta fish has a terrific pedigree.

When examining betta life expectancy, make sure you understand that the creature you buy in fish stores are generally a minimum of six months to one full year old.  There are a large amount of points that can prolong your little buddy’s longevity.

These are water conditions, like the acidity level, the way it is treated (make sure to evaporate all the chlorine if using water from the tap!), and numerous other factors.  The temperature must be constant without any drops or increases, and must be warm since betta fish are a warm weather creature.  Their diet is also obviously important in prolonging their life span, with diversity and disinfected food critical to longer life.  Understanding how to recognize and treat different sicknesses is also a prime contributor in prolonging his life span.

Betta Life Span – Water Conditions
The water you use needs to be tepid and kept at a constant temperature.  Typically, this will include a tropical temperature of approximately 74-78 Fahrenheit, a pH level of 6.4-7.6, and disinfected water free from ammonia, nitrites and nitrates.

Be certain to check out Water for Betta fish to learn about maintaining the ideal temperature and other water conditions for your new friend.  This post goes into great depth keeping and maintaining ideal water conditions which will lengthen your betta fish life.  Chlorine must be wiped out, the water temperature must be unfluctuating, and the water needs to be treated for parasites and bacteria.

Betta Life Span – Food and Feeding your Betta

The diet of your new friend also is a major contributor in lengthening his life span.  Generally it is crucial to feed your betta food that is diverse.  You’ll soon see that your betta is much more lively and has a shinier color if his food has all the essential nutrition that can be found in a diversity of food.  Be certain to check out Feeding Betta Fish for a complete breakdown of all the types of food you can feed him, as well as the pluses and minuses of each.  Everything from living food to freeze dried food or fish pellets has advantages and disadvantages.

Betta Life Span – Sickness Prevention and Treatment
The ideal way to treat most sicknesses is to not let your betta catch them to start with.  This can be done simply by frequently replacing the water (or using a filter) and by always treating the water with Aquarisol and Salt so you can wipe out many common parasites and harmful bacteria or fungus.  The best guide to diagnosing and treating a diseased Betta is the blog Betta Fish Illness and Treatment.

Betta imbellis Peaceful Betta

Betta imbellis Peaceful Betta

$5.99

“Imbellis” means peaceful, and these bettas are certainly different from their Siamese Fighting Fish relatives, Betta splendens. Betta imbellis does better in a community aquarium, though they still may have quarrels with similar fish, they are considerably less aggressive. Contrary to popular belief, this betta would prefer a larger rather than smaller tank. Nothing less than 1 gallon would be best, and the water should be cleaned regularly. A sponge filter or some kind of filter that doesn’t have a strong pull would also be helpful. This betta also appreciates a place to hide, floating plants, etc. Bettas are carnivores. A meaty diet of betta pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, or a betta flake is best. Do not feed solely bloodworms- bettas do need some fiber for proper digestion. Special Note: Bettas do not eat the roots of the Peace Lily plant. They may nip at them out of boredom, or out of desperation if they haven’t been fed! Be sure to feed your betta if you are keeping him in the Lily set-up, and leave a small space for the betta to get to air. Bettas are labyrinth fish, which means they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air. Bettas may not be shipped to California.

Betta splendens Crowntail Betta- Male

Betta splendens Crowntail Betta- Male

$5.99

Bettas are one of the most beautiful of all the anabantoids (gouramis, or “air-breathers”). Their ability to breathe air directly from the atmosphere enables them to live in the stagnant pools and puddles in which they naturally occur. The bettas seen in stores today are very different from the wild types. Throughout the years the betta has been bred for longer fins and intense colors. They are very different from the short finned, mostly brown, wild bettas. Crowntail bettas are a variety of betta that can be distinguished by their deeply serrated fins that have the appearance of the points of a crown. Bettas have evolved a very intense territorial aggression to the point where they are best kept by themselves. They do not tolerate other males and females are only tolerated when breeding. This natural behavior and their ability to breathe atmospheric air makes them ideal for keeping in bowls and small aquaria. As long as the water is kept relatively warm and is changed regularly, they do very well. Bettas are carnivorous fish and must be fed meaty foods. There are many special prepared Betta diets (flake/pellet) that are excellent foods. Blood worms, brine shrimp, and plankton are also excellent as treats. Keep in mind that a betta has a stomach about the size of it’s eye. It should be fed an eyeful every day to maintain it’s shape and health. It is very popular to keep bettas in a flower vase with a terrarium plant like the peace lily. This is an excellent setup for the fish but the water must be changed weekly or more and the fish fed regularly to keep it healthy. You must also keep a fair amount of space between the water level and top of the vase, because bettas need an open space to breathe atmospheric air. Also, BETTAS DO NOT EAT THE ROOTS OF THE PLANT! This is a popular misconception about this particular setup. If you happen to see your betta nibbling the roots, this is probably just out of starvation (if you aren’t feeding it) or boredom. There are many names for the particular betta color patterns but most are variations of blue and/or red colors. If you are looking for a specific coloration, contact a livestock department representative or simply allow us to choose one of our favorites for you! Bettas are restricted and will not be shipped to California.

  • cat brush: The tools on the market today such as the furminator make it so easy to groom your cat. I no longer go to professional groomers.
