Poodles are easily trainable dogs. They’re very quick in grasping what they are taught and are eager to learn more. So poodle obedience training is not something too difficult. It can be done at home all by yourself or cyou can take them to a training class. Training classes are advisable as poodles are reserved to strangers. Therefore, this would help them get used to new people and surroundings.
Obedience training of a poodle includes commands such as sit, come, stay, heel, etc. Out of all the commands, “Sit” is the easiest to teach for the master and quicker to learn for the poodle. On the other hand, Heel is considered to be the most difficult of all.
Incorporate positive reinforecement in your training to make them easy and fun for your poodle. This can be achieved by making sure your poodle is praised and rewarded at good performance. Even a small treat would do well for the next step. Poodles by nature are anxious and eager so this expression of pleasure will encourage them.
Their meals, diet, walks, play time everything should be planned properly and taken care of thoroughly. You should be thorough in your training and should not assume things. Its not just the commands that matter in their training but also general day to day instructions should also be taught simultaneously. They should be trained to stay calm and peaceful at all times. Poodles get panicky in certain conditions so you could have a barking poodle to deal with sometimes. Keeping quiet and patient when asked to is also a part of obedience training.
You should ensure a distraction free atmosphere while training as poodles have a short attention span. Their training should be consistent and every member of the family should impart the same message and command throughout the training period as well as afterwards. Doing otherwise will cause the poodle to get confused and that would be a waste of your training.
