How to Train a Horse – The Basics

As it relates to horse training there is as many styles and methods as there are paid trainers, and do it yourself horse training books specialize in different training approaches. However, most horse trainers are in agreement over the basic training methods of how to train a horse, along with manners of treating every day issues such as horse hoof problems.Do you have a foal that will need to be trained for riding? Then the tips described below will help you with the basic training methods that you will need to know.

Fitting the halter

You will first have to fit the halter on the horse first. This task is easier said than done because the horse may get frisky when the halter is put on their head for the first time. When you have got the halter placed on the horse, and the horse no longer sees it as a threat, take the time to introduce the horse to a riding blanket for its back and grooming to get them used to it. The next phase of training will be in the round pen.

Trotting

The training of basic maneuvers is conducted in a small circular pen called a round pen. Teaching a horse how to trot and stop on command is one of the training measures conducted in the round pen. The horse will also have to be taught how to turn and back up with verbal commands. Teaching the horse to start, stop, turn, and back up will have to continue until the horse begins to respond to the commands. When you have achieved the results, attaching a lunge line to the halter will be the next step. The lunge line is a 25′ long rope that you will use to train the horse, and it is advised that you wear gloves during the training. This technique involves leading the horse with a rope to guide them along using verbal commands.

Driving lessons

A bond of trust between the horse and trainer should be established enough to begin the driving lessons. Two 25′ long ropes are attached to the halter on either side for the purposes of driving lessons. The trainer teaches the horse to follow commands while walking behind the horse. Once you are comfortable with the horse’s compliance you can take them to the corral for more complex maneuvers while fine tuning the basic ones.

Saddling

It will be time to saddle the horse when you are sure how the horse will behave to your commands. You will want to saddle the horse back at the round pen. Don’t be surprised if the horse gets a little frisky when you attempt to saddle it for the first time. Expect the horse to avoid you by running from you, or even bucking up to keep you from putting the saddle on them. The key will be lots of patience from you and encouragement towards the horse. Eventually the horse will realize that the saddle posses no threat to them, and will submit to the saddling process.

There are many horse training books that can aid you with more methods to training your new horse if you run into any problems. And when you are done learning how to train a horse, you will need to train yourself how to deal with the daily problems that a horse will have, like horse hoof problems amongst other things.

  • cat brush: The tools on the market today such as the furminator make it so easy to groom your cat. I no longer go to professional groomers.
  • Jodi Adams: I agree, it's always good to research and understand the pets needs before getting one. They are also great companionship for seniors. Cheers Jod
