Do you want your German Shepherd to heel with precision, sit calmly or stay on command? Training a German Shepherd in obedience teaches you to direct your pup with your voice instead of by wrestling. With obedience training, you can also end your puppys undesirable habits like biting and barking. You can attend an obedience training class or do your training at home with a training DVD.
You may notice that these outcomes depend on you. How you act will change your puppy’s behavior. Your pets genetics is important also, but you are the key to success.
Before you start training your pup, you need to learn the verbal commands. You need to say the same instruction consistently if you want predictable behavior. Your pet will learn to respond to simple directions. Treats are a good motivator.
Besides using consistent commands, you must learn to correct bad behavior. For young puppies, you correct behavior by repeating the instruction. Not giving the pup a reward can be correction enough. Do not be aggressive when obedience training a puppy.
This is what you should expect out of obedience training your German Shepherd. It is best to start training your pet as soon as it is weaned. Your pup can learn these directions as young as eight weeks.
“Focus” – Pay attention to the trainer
“Sit” – Sit and look at you
“Stand” – Standing on four feet
“Stay” – Being still for short periods
“Down” – Belly on the ground and looking up
“Come” – Go to the trainer
“OK” – Relax
“No” – Stops the current action and focuses on the trainer
This is a lot to be taught so you should not try to teach your pup too many commands quickly. Teach your dog one or two commands at a time. It is best to master each command before teaching more.
When your puppy has mastered the beginning commands, it is time to go on to more training. These skills are more complicated to train. It will be faster and easier if you get guidance on how to teach these skills to your puppy.
* “Go” – Go where you point
* “Stop” – Stop and wait
* “Off” – Jump down
* “Back” – Back up a few steps
* “Heel” – Stand at and walk at the trainers heel
The following commands are useful when you are puppy potty training or crate training, and when you are correcting puppy chewing or nipping.
* “Potty” – Tells your puppy to go to the bathroom where it is standing
* “Kennel up” – Get in the crate
* “Gentle” – Take food or an object without nipping the source
* “No bite” – Stop biting or nipping
* “Drop” – Drop what is in its mouth
* “Leave it” – Ignore an object that the dog is moving toward
Your dog can continue to learn new skills. Puppies are naturally active and curious, and they thrive with continued instruction. You can go beyond obedience training your dog. Your pup can learn tricks like playing dead, barking on command, and many more behaviors. If you focus on obedience training a puppy, your pup will have fun, and you can be proud of your obedient pup.

Beyond Obedience: Training With Awareness For You & Your Dog $9.89 Beyond Obedience is a revolutionary new training program for you and your dog from one of our country’s foremost animal advocates and holistic practitioners. The idea that your canine companion is a fully emotional being and acutely sensitive to your changing feelings and moods is the foundation of April Frost’s original and highly effective training program. One of the most difficult aspects of training your dog is communicating your intentions clearly. Beyond Obedience is the first book that works on the way you communicate with your dog, providing you with the necessary tools to truly understand how your dog’s mind works and, therefore, how you can create an effective and mutually satisfying relationship. Drawing on her extensive experiences as an animal behaviorist, Frost teaches you that training your dog should not be a tedious chore limited to exerting physical and psychological control over an animal’s drives, but instead an enriching and spiritually fulfilling experience–gratifying for both human and animal. Frost discusses such essential concepts as mutual respect, unconditional love, mental and emotional discipline, and your expectations and priorities. She shows you how the insights gained from working with your dog can have positive, far-ranging effects on many areas of your life. Beyond Obedience revolutionizes dog training by addressing the spiritual, physical, and psychological needs of dogs and people, teaching them to communicate effectively through powerful techniques, including visualization and energy work, and offering them valuable insight into the emotional bonds that enrich the lives of animals and their companions. Guidelines Dogs are born knowing how to bark, bite, dig, chew, chase, jump up on one another, eliminate when they need to, and snarl when they feel threatened. It is a challenge to get a dog to suppress or modify his instincts in order to make human existence more pleasant. If the dog reverts, you need to remember that these acts are not malicious; the dog is simply doing the best he can with information he has been given about living with and behaving in a socially acceptable way toward a totally different species. Dogs can learn whatever you can find a way to teach them, so long as it is within their physical capability to perform. Dogs, like humans, take the path of least resistance; they do only what works well and easily to satisfy their needs and desires. If it is a self-rewarding move, they will repeat and escalate the behavior, whether that behavior is in harmony or conflict with your wishes. Every dog has its own point of motivation, a trigger that will evoke a response and awaken its desire to respond to its human. From the Hardcover edition. |

Early-start Potty Training $24.1 The time-tested, gentle, and successful method that introduces children to potty training as early as six months While parents around the world successfully potty train their children well before preschool age, in the United States, we`ve moved away from this early introduction. However, there`s no evidence that later is better–in fact, there`s even significant reason to believe that later can be detrimental. Written by a respected child psychologist, Early-Start Potty Training shows why the early-start method is preferable to the commonly used readiness method. Waiting until children show signs of readiness can hold them back from preschool, cost a fortune in diapers, and lead to health problems. The early-start method avoids these concerns by starting the process of training as early as six months old. This easy-to-follow program provides you with: Time-tested training tips for introducing toddlers–and even infants–to the potty Methods for combating common problems of training delay A troubleshooting plan for moving toddlers from diapers to potty independence Hints on how to overcome accidents and build confidence in children |

Saint Training $10.09 Mary Clare is on the lookout for a miracle. Mary Clare O’Brian is determined to be a saint when she grows up (the halo will help cover her frizzy hair). But lately none of her prayers seem to be working the way she wants them to: her mother is losing her faith her parents can’t pay all the bills and her brother receives a draft notice for the war in Vietnam. Mary Clare has a plan to help but it just doesn’t seem to be working. How is she supposed to become a saint when her world is falling apart? Dear Mother Superior My name is Mary Clare O’Brian and I am in sixth grade. I would like to join the convent right after 8th grade before I start liking boys too much. I’m already having problems with boys liking me. Gregory in my class throws spitballs at me and told my best friend he likes me. I haven’t told him that I want to be God’s bride yet. Do you think I should? Mary Clare O’Brian is always on the lookout for a miracle but with a war in Vietnam race riots in the city and turmoil at home miracles seem to be in short supply. |
