Choosing a pet? Heres some help

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

Unsure of what pet to get- heres a few bullet points about a few animals you may consider.

  • Cats. Cats dont need to be taken out for walks, are well groomed and quiet animals (except when they want feeding). Cats are more nocturnal as well, going out and coming back in only in the mourning. Given cost, cats are alittle cheaper than dogs, they dont require the training and the insurance is less.
  • Dogs. Mans best friend? A dog requires being taken for a walk every day, if not every other day, which can be great exercise for both dog and owner. Dogs can be very loyal creatures but will need some training.
  • Rodents. Mice, Hamsters, Gerbils and Rats. The little critters can go on for about a year and a half, though dont be surprised if they go on for alittle longer. Make sure you get the right cage size -a mice can squeeze through some bars and rats need enough room. Remember a wheel for exercise, but replace it if it starts squeaking so your not kept up all night.
  • Guinea pigs and Rabbits. Both can move quicker than you think, so be prepared to chase them around the garden. Your gonna need room for them to runaround, plus a hutch for them to stay in. Give them fresh lettuce/ carrots to go with their feed, and you must move their hutches into somewhere warm when winter sets in.
  • Snakes. Costly because you’ll need special accomodation made, equipment to make sure the room stays at the right temperature for them and a collection of mice for them to eat. The price of the snake depends of the size, with grass snakes not going to costs at much as a huge boa python.
  • Spiders. You’ll need bugs for them to eat, a small container and a wife who wont freak out if they escape.

  • Jodi Adams: I agree, it's always good to research and understand the pets needs before getting one. They are also great companionship for seniors. Cheers Jod
