An Introduction to Pet Health Care

Posted by: admin In: Pet Care

For people who have pets, they’re a part of the family. This is why pet health care is more important than ever. Because vet bills can be costly, it’s important to take on some simple advice to keep your pet healthy and avoid illness in later life.

Bigger animals such as cats and dogs must be vaccinated when they are puppies and kittens. Although this is expensive, it cannot be forgotten. In the long run though, vaccination saves money by protecting against life threatening conditions.

Similarly, cats and dogs must be wormed and treated for fleas and ticks. Preventing these pests might seem expensive, but prevention is better than cure.

A major part of pet health care is making sure your pet is happy and comfortable. A suitable place to sleep is vital. Cats might sleep in a variety of different places in the house. However, dogs should be given a bed. Also, smaller pets like hamsters and rabbits need a warm place with the appropriate material. You can buy hamster bedding at pet shops, but they’re just as happy with shredded paper.

Your pet’s diet is also very important to their health. pet obesity is actually a problem in the UK, so care should be taken to feed pets the right food. Although they love it, cats shouldn’t be given too much fatty milk, so save that for treats. It is very easy to get accustomed to feeding your dog food intended for people at the table. A little of this is ok, but remember when he’s at the table begging for food that he also has dog food to eat, so not to give him too much. Rabbits love fresh vegetables and varying their diet is fantastic for them.

Exercise is very important for pets. Even small pets like hamsters need a good run, so make sure they have the biggest cage you can accommodate to give them space to explore. It’s also a good idea to let your hamster out of its cage daily; you could buy a plastic ball for it to run about in. Watch out though, as hamsters are great escape artists. Cats will normally take care of their own exercise, but keeping them active with toys is a great idea. When it’s cold outside, some cats are reluctant to go out, even though you feel sorry for your cat, a gentle push in the right direction is good for them. Exercising your dog is easy, because most dogs love a good walk. Remember that too much exercise is as bad as too little, so get the right amount. Generally, you can assume the bigger the dog, the longer his walk should be.

These are very simple considerations which are very effective in giving your pet a healthy lifestyle. You should always take your pet for an annual check up with the vet, but giving your pet a healthy life is vital to your pet health care regime. This advice could save you money and heartache by preventing illness in your pet.
